Next meeting: TBD
Role call: Shelby Repinski, Emily Combs, Duke Pauli, Terrence Frett, Jamie Sherman
New Business:
We need to decide what the role of this committee will be. To do this we have come up with the following goals:
1) Develop a mission statement
2) Decide how to better integrate graduate students into the next NAPB/PBCC meeting
3) Get more student involvement
4) Meet monthly
Regarding goal #1 we have agreed to each come up with a mission statement that concisely summarizes what the goals of the group are. These statements will be compiled and integrated into one mission statement. We think the group should serve as a bridge between the whole graduate student body and the NAPB executive committee, perhaps with one or several members serving on both committees.
Regarding goal #2 we have discussed having a graduate student networking event at the beginning of the next NAPB meeting to facilitate interaction. Additionally we would like to help organize a graduate student mixer hosted by Dow AgroSciences/Purdue. Our group would like to work with the meeting organizers to help make these events happen. Lastly we would like to encourage another poster session as well as the opportunity for students to give oral presentations.
Regarding goal #3 we would like to compile a list of all university plant breeding graduate departments/groups and student plant breeding organizations. This list will be used to disseminate NAPB and plant breeding related materials. We would also like to find a workspace that allows the quickest and most thorough dissemination of this information (facebook group, google+, twitter, passel etc.). We also discussed who this group should be for – graduate students, undergraduates, postdocs?
Regarding goal #4 we propose to meet early February and then meet monthly until the next NAPB meeting. In January, a doodle poll will be sent out to interested students to decide a date and time.
