NAPB Communications Subcommittee

Minutes:
The main topic of the meeting was to discuss the organization of the media coverage that SeedWorld magazine will do during the NAPB conference in May, 2011. Outcomes from that conversation:
- Allen contacted SeedWorld and they were interested in covering the NAPB conference. Coverage will include short video interviews and a two page article in the magazine.
- Discussions were mainly about interesting stories to tell and breeders or students to interview in the short videos or longer videos with tour. Suggestions include:
- Roger Beachy: NIFA director. If he attends, it will be a great opportunity to have the opinion and ideas from the governmental side
- Seth Murray: new corn breeder at TAMU
- Mark Hussey: Representative of TAMU as the conference host
- A representative of NAPB: to talk about the constitution of the organization, role and activities.
- An industry representative
- Bill Rooney: for a tour that might include a field tour. To show his work on sorghum breeding and possibly his collaborative projects with the industry.
- Graduate students: Potential students to interview could be selected based on poster competitions or just based on the interest and/or uniqueness of their work presented during the conference
- Farmers or producers attending the conference
- Cotton incorporated

Minutes:
- General discussion and update on the following topics:
- Web site content: Links to Seedquest and recently published paper were added. Reminder of option to publish Plant Breeding stories. Maria is working on adding NAPB links to ISU Baker Center website.
- Review of last Education Subcommittee meeting: Shelby is working with John Hart (Cornell University) on gathering graduate students feedback and suggestions for the career development section of next meeting in Texas.
- Allen and other scientists are putting together a proposal to determine the supply/demand of plant breeding. Funding opportunities exist; the project will not be a formal survey.
- Newsletter: The communication subcomittee will be in charge of writing this newsletter, which will be distributed bi-monthly to all members of NAPB. David Stelly will be responsible for sending the e-mail to all members.
- Master list of institutions and press contact: Maria will be responsible for putting together an excel file with all contacts of land-grant universities and professional societies including press contacts (both for internal and external information release), graduate program representative and newspaper contact. This list will be used to distribute press releases.
2010 Subcommittee - Communications

Mission: To frame and communicate the messages of the Plant Breeding Coordinating committee.
In its inaugural year the communications committee:
- Delivered a press release on the 2009 PBCC meeting
- Created and published two articles describing the work of the PBCC in Seedworld magazine in Dec. 2009 and September 2010.
- Advertised plant breeding courses
- Aided in advertising and development of content for the 2010 PBCC meeting
- Supported the PBCC in responses to media (NPR) and letters to parties
- Welcomed Shelby Repinski as a graduate student liaison for the Communications committee
- Elected Maria Salas-Fernandez, Ames, IA as secretary.
The communications committee for 2010-2011 comprises

Our goals for 2011 are expanded with a more active effort to promote plant breeding. Specifically the committee will:
- Communicate the messages of the PBCC
- Work with PBCC membership to develop 1-2 minute videos aiming to promote plant breeding using a series of interviews with plant breeders and students to post on the PBCC website
- Work with the education committee to develop and populate an education portal on the website. This includes working with SEEDQUEST to mirror the information from this portal.
- Develop a career website for student-grad students, postdocs, public positions
The committee also formally requests that the PBCC webmaster be part of the Communications Committee.
